Kombucha

I'm sure a lot of you out there are familiar with Kombucha tea. You can pick up a bottle at nearly any Health Food store out there. If you buy some, just make sure it's unpasturized. Pasturization kills all the enzymes and good bacteria that make Kombucha the powerful health drink that it is. My favorite is Ginger Berry by GT's. At at least $3 a pop, these drinks could break your budget, although if you have to choose between this and a Starbuck's coffee drink, please choose a Kombucha! Fortunately you can make your own a home for pennies. You can purchase the scoby (which is what ferments the tea) online if you want. I've gotten a couple of ebay before. Or you can create your own scoby, which is what I'm currently doing. Once you get going, it's like amish friendship bread! You can pass out scobys to your friends so that they can make their own kombucha tea!
Here is a link for you: http://www.foodrenegade.com/2009/02/02/how-to-grow-a-kombucha-scoby/

And once you have a scoby use this recipe! Granted I would half this one because it makes 2 gallons http://www.foodrenegade.com/2009/02/06/how-to-brew-kombucha-double-fermentation-method/

So why drink Kombucha tea? Well, it's really one of the best things you could put into your body because it's ALIVE!!! Here's a link to it's health benefits http://www.foodrenegade.com/2008/12/12/kombucha-health-benefits/
And another tidbit... Kombucha contains S. Boulardii which is the bacteria that combats food poisoning, diarrhea, and helps with IBS symptoms!!!

Hi Amanda,

Your MIL told me you were into organic foods.
Over the years I have wanted to do the same (use organic) and I can make all kinds of excuses for not going for it with gusto. Mostly the reason was cost. But business, convenience and where to buy it also played a roll.
But now we can get organic foods at a more reasonable rate.
Just last Friday at my DAR meeting (in Coeur d' Alene) the manager of our local health food store came and spoke on organic foods. He does all of the research and ordering for their store, which has recently been enlarged and doing quite well. He started out 35 years ago as a migrant farm worker and saw what was being done to the foods, so it turned him to organic food and he has never looked back.
I was amazed at what is being done to our foods...so I am trying to make some changes. It will take time to completely switch over, but I am making a commitment to do it. I drink green tea (probably not organic) all day long, but will check out what you are saying about Kombucha.
Maybe I can ask you questions if I need guidance???
I will save your blog and refer back to it.
BTW we go grow a garden albeit it has gotten small since it is only Tim and I now. Funny thing though, we had a water line break in the fall and the back yard is all torn up, so instead of replanting lawn we are going to make the whole thing veggie garden this spring . When my kids were little we lived off of our garden, had to, had no money. So I canned for weeks. I miss those times! Plan to go back to it.

I would love to have my own garden someday!! That is so awesome that you're going to go for it!!
Yes, I forget to mention it in the article, but Kombucha tea doesn't taste like tea anymore because the tea has been fermented! It actually tastes similar it apple cider vinegar and has a fizz to it. I love the taste and crave it!! One of my friends said it's her husband's "beer"! Anyhow, hope you enjoy it and let me know what you think!!

This is great. I was just looking for a recipe online today and talking to my Mom about scobys and where to get them....Yay Amanda. Thanks!
We still need to get our girls together sometime. :)

Totally Kailee, we do need to get the girls together. Especially since the weather is getting so nice!

You can wait until I have a scoby to pass on or ask Rachel Meier. She makes it for Marcus and should have extra for you!
