Amazing Omega-3's

I'm sure you've all heard about Omega-3's and DHA in particular. They've added it to milk, baby formula, eggs, and more!! I'm a HUGE fan of Omega-3's, but I do believe some are definitely better than others.
There is only one vegetarian source that actually contains the important DHA in the Omega-3 family and it's an algae. Flax seed oil does not have DHA! Some of it is supposed to convert to DHA, but it is unproven how much or if it really does at all. So unless you're having hormonal issues, I don't recommend Flax seed oil. The seeds and meal are great for fiber though!!

My favorite supplemental form is Krill Oil. It has 50 times more antioxidants than Fish oil and is assimilated better in the body. Only down side is that it's way more expensive. I don't take it based on my budget. You're second best option is Fish oil. Not just any fish oil is good! You can't just go to Wally World and buy it expecting it to give you much benefit! You want a reputable company that has quality tested it to be free of Mercury and other PCB's. The best brand in my opinion is Carlson's. I take the liquid Orange flavor because again, it's better on my budget. My daughters drink it too! It doesn't taste like fish. It tastes like orange oil! You can buy it in pill form if you're not up for taking a teaspoon a day.

My second favorite Omega 3 form is eggs!! Organic Free range eggs are the best! If you can buy them locally, that's even better because organic eggs are not regulated. Organic eggs are superior to conventional for these reasons:
* 1/3 less cholesterol
* 1/4 less saturated fat
* 2/3 more vitamin A
* 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids
* 3 times more vitamin E
* 7 times more beta carotene

It's really best to eat your eggs raw. I know, it sounds disgusting, but it's true. The more you cook them, the higher the chances they'll cause high cholesterol. Although, the chances are still much lower than what was once believed. And don't worry about salmonella. You're chances of getting salmonella from organic eggs is very slim. Conventional have 6 times more instances of salmonella than organic! Try hiding a raw egg in your smoothie, or you can just pull a Rocky!

My newest favorite way to squeeze in Omega-3's is Sardines. I love them! And because they're such a small fish, their contamination risk is very low. Be sure and read the ingredient list. Sometimes they have added junk. It should only say Sardines, olive oil, and salt on the label.

Oh, and I almost forgot!! Grass fed beef is yet another way to get some Omega-3. It's very expensive, but is worth the investment. I'll talk later about the meat industry. It's pretty scary!

So feed your brain and protect your heart!! Invest in Omega-3's!
