I realized that I didn't tell you the benefits of Omega 3's! I just told you my favorite sources of it.
60% of people are deficient in Omega 3's and 20% have so little, it can't even be detected in their blood!!! Our brains are made of 60% structural fats, and not just any kind of fat!! We put so many trans-fats and omega 6 (vegetable oils) fats in our bodies, but those interfere with our absorption of omega 3!! We should eat a ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 (vegetable oils, nuts, etc) of 1:1 to 1:4, but we eat a ratio closer to 1:20!! Avoid sunflower, corn, soy, safflower, and canola oils. to improve your ratio. Olive, coconut, avocado oils, and organic butter are ok. There are symptoms to look for of fatty acid imbalance. They are:
Dry skin, Alligator skin ,"Chicken skin" on back of arms, Dandruff, Lowered immunity, Dry eyes, Frequent urination, Fatigue, Poor wound healing, Irritability, Dry, unmanageable hair, Frequent infections, Attention deficit, Hyperactivity, Learning problems, Soft nails, Brittle, easily frayed nails, Patches of pale skin on cheeks, Allergies, Excessive thirst, and Cracked skin on heels or fingertips.
DHA feeds your brain!!! Your dopamine and serotonin receptors are made of DHA!!! This is why it's so important that children to have adequate amounts!! Many kids with ADD and Hyperactivity would have fewer symptoms if Omega 3 where supplemented. Breast milk has naturally occurring DHA, but guess where it's coming from??? If you're not supplementing enough of it, it will come from your brain!!! I believe this contributes to the momnesia I talk about!!
DHA helps with focusing and mood and EPA, another component of Omega 3's helps with mood and stress as well!
Alright, so besides being so great for your brain...I'm sure you've heard about Omega 3 and it's cardiovascular benefits. It lowers bad cholesterol and raises good cholesterol! It lowers triglycerides and helps with arrythmias! What an amazing oil!!
How much do you take??? The ideal amount would be one Carlson's fish oil pill per 10 lbs of body weight (if one pill has approximately 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA), in two doses. Even if you could take half that, I think you'd notice a difference!! Especially those mom's out there who need help with mood, stress, and focus!!! I definitely notice a difference!
